"I CANT WAIT MOVIES" 2019

Movies that will blow everyone away in 2019

Read More: http://www.looper.com/58711/movies-will-blow-everyone-away-2019/?utm_campaign=clip019 may seem like it's a long way off, but movie studios are already filling up their slates with big-budget, high-octane adventures that theatergoers are not going to want to miss. While some may say it's a bit early for people to be setting their calendar for midnight release dates, we say that you can never plan too much ahead. Here are all the movies that will blow you away in 2019.

Hellboy - Jan. 11

David Harbour will unveil his new take on Hellboy in 2019, with the Stranger Things star joining director Neil Marshall for what's described as a gritty take on the classic Mike Mignola comics. Harbour has said the movie will use a "darker tone" to differentiate itself from Guillermo del Toro's adaptations, adding that it'll be more of "a character piece" about Hellboy's "struggle."

While Harbour's take on Hellboy looks spot on, the rest of the cast is also packed with potential, including Milla Jovovich as the villainous Blood Queen, Ian McShane as Hellboy's adopted father, and Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan. The movie also has signed Lost's Daniel Dae Kim to play comics favorite Major Ben Daimio (although it took them a while to get there).

Glass - Jan. 18

M. Night Shyamalan continues his surprise superhero trilogy with Glass, a sequel to 2017's Split—whose final act unexpectedly tied in with 2000's Unbreakable. The movie will bring back all the main players from both films, with Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy, and Anya Taylor-Joy all confirmed to return. Details are still under wraps—and given how much Shyamalan loves surprises, it'll probably stay that way for some time—but this is a story nearly 20 years in the making, so we're sure the director knows what he's doing.

Silver and Black - Feb. 8

Sony's Spider-Man universe gets a female-led entry in 2019 with Silver and Black, directed by The Secret Life of Bees and Beyond the Lights helmer Gina Prince-Bythewood. Prince-Bythewood, who directed Marvel's Cloak and Dagger pilot for Freeform, will also assist with the script, alongside Thor: Ragnarok's Chris Yost. The movie is set to follow the mercenary Silver Sable, also known as Silver Sablinova, and the burglar Black Cat, also known as Felicia Hardy.

Prince-Bythewood has said she wants the tone of the film to feel like Thelma and Louise, adding, "I wanted to tell the story of two damaged women who are at war with each other but need each other to survive." The dark film will reportedly bring in Mendel Storm—a.k.a. the cyborg supervillain Gaunt— and his enforcers Tarantula and Scorpion as the villains.

The Lego Movie Sequel - Feb. 8

The Lego Movie was the surprise hit of 2014, making $469 million worldwide and spawning a host of planned spinoffs. However, the actual sequel to the original film has run into quite a few production delays, pushing its planned 2018 release back to 2019. Even though everything hasn't exactly been awesome behind the scenes, there are still a lot of reasons to believe that the not-so-creatively-titled Lego Movie Sequel will blow you away.

The script was originally written by the first film's directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg later taking a stab at a rewrite before Lord and Miller came back to put their take on it again. The movie plans to investigate gender differences between how boys and girls play, building (ahem) on the Duplo pieces introduced by Finn's sister at the end of the first film—a good connection to the first movie that should still feel distinct. With Trolls' Mike Mitchell on board to direct, The Lego Movie Sequel should be well worth the wait.

Bride of Frankenstein - Feb. 14

Beauty and the Beast's Bill Condon looks to take on another iconic character with Universal's Bride of Frankenstein, which is set to provide some alternative Valentine's Day programming in 2019. Despite their troubles with the Dark Universe, the studio already has Javier Bardem on board to play Frankenstein's monster, and rumor has it they're pursuing an even bigger star for the role of the Bride: Angelina Jolie.

While Jolie's name hasn't been confirmed yet, Universal does plan on expanding the Bride's part from her screentime in the 1936 original. "There's something mysterious about her and that look, and the idea that she was created to serve another man," Dark Universe producer Alex Kurtzman said of the original film. "Which is gonna be an interesting thing to tackle in this day and age. It might be something we subvert in our film." With a postmodern approach and an all-star cast likely, this could be a reboot worth seeing.

How to Train Your Dragon 3 - March 1

How to Train Your Dragon 3 is another animated sequel that has faced a number of hurdles on its way to production, but the movie still has a lot going for it. For one thing, the film has a pretty intense logline: "As Hiccup fulfills his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia, Toothless' discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the Night Fury away. When danger mounts at home and Hiccup's reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind." The movie will also see the return of the franchise's Oscar-nominated writer and director Dean DeBlois, who says it will be the "culmination of Hiccup's coming of age," meaning the film should pull together lots of plot points from the original and the sequel without having to hold anything back. With much of the original and sequel's voice cast also returning and with an intense, no-holds-barred plot, How to Train Your Dragon 3 should definitely be a fun trip to the theater.

Chaos Walking - March 1

Getty Images
Your next favorite YA adaptation will hit theaters in 2019 with Chaos Walking, a sci-fi adventure based on the trilogy of the same name by Patrick Ness. The movie takes place on a planet where almost all the women have been killed off by a virus and living creatures can hear each other's thoughts through a series of words and images called Noise. As the story begins, a young man (Tom Holland) meets a woman (Daisy Ridley) who may have the key to unlocking the world's many secrets.

If Holland and Ridley weren't enough to get you on board, the movie has an amazing supporting cast that includes Oscar nominee Demian Bichir, two-time Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo, Tony winner Cynthia Erivo, critical favorite Mads Mikkelsen, and pop star Nick Jonas. The movie even has Edge of Tomorrow's Doug Liman on board to direct, so mark your calendars now.

Captain Marvel - March 8

Branden Stall for Looper
Marvel's first female-led superhero film will be long, long overdue when it finally hits theaters in 2019, but the movie is shaping up to be worth the wait. For one thing, Captain Marvel has Oscar winner Brie Larson as its Carol, an actress who has shown she has the ability to pull off action, comedy, and drama. The character also seems like she'll be getting a pretty impressive on-screen version. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said Captain Marvel will be "as powerful a character as we've ever put in a movie." There's also some impressive talent behind the scenes, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the mind behind the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot and DC's Gotham City Sirens, rewriting a script from Guardians of the Galaxy's Nicole Perlman and Inside Out's Meg LeFauve.

While we don't know what'll happen in Captain Marvel's first solo big-screen adventure, the studio has directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck at the helm. The talent it's assembled thus far is impressive and hints that the film, which will serve as an origin story for Carol (and will be different than her origin story from the comics), will definitely be a must-see. While we wait to find out more, we've done a little Photoshop to show you what Larson might look like when she wields Captain Marvel's power.

Godzilla: King of Monsters - March 22

Godzilla: King of Monsters is the follow-up to the well-received 2014 film featuring the monster and is said to bring in a whole new cast, with Stranger Things' Millie Bobby Brown, Bates Motel's Vera Farmiga, and Friday Night Lights' Kyle Chandler playing a family swept up in the trouble the monster causes. With the impressive cast, which is also rumored to include the original's Ken Watanabe as the only returnee alongside Straight Outta Compton's O'Shea Jackson Jr. in an undisclosed role, Godzilla: King of Monsters should be able to live up to the positive reviews of the original while providing more big-screen monster mayhem.

Dumbo - March 29

Disney has given a number of animated classics the live-action treatment, but one of the most intriguing is Tim Burton's Dumbo, starring Colin Farrell as Holt, a former circus performer whose life is turned upside down after he returns home from the war. Holt teams up with circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) to care for the titular newborn elephant, whose giant ears have already made him a laughingstock.

However, Dumbo's and Holt's fates quickly change when the elephant reveals he can fly, leading businessman V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) and his partner Colette Marchant (Eva Green) to swoop in to try and make him a star. The movie's all-star cast also includes Alan Arkin as a Wall Street tycoon. With Burton and a whole host of amazing actors on board, this should be a worthy retelling of the classic tale.

Shazam! - April 5

Shazam! has been a long time in the making, but the DC Comics movie is currently slated to finally hit theaters in 2019. Although the movie has been plagued by issues thus far and has yet to find a star, it should bring a different tone to the DC film universe, with the teenage superhero, who gets his powers by uttering that one magic word, sure to be a bit more ridiculous and humorous than his counterparts. While Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam will likely no longer appear now that he's getting his own standalone film, there are plenty of other villains for DC to mine, and the young hero should allow for the mix of fantastical and real-life problems that have served superhero films well in the past. The behind-the-scenes crew also hints at a different DC film than we've seen before, with Jack the Giant Slayer's Darren Lemke attached to work on the script and Lights Out's David F. Sandberg set to direct.

The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle - April 12

Getty Images
Eddie Murphy may be the man most synonymous with Doctor Dolittle, but Robert Downey Jr. will put his stamp on the legendary character in 2019. Downey, who will likely be done with his MCU days after the fourth Avengers film, is set to play the lead in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, which will be based on the same 1920s Hugh Lofting children's books as the famous Murphy films.

The movie comes from a script by Stephen Gaghan (Syriana), who's also set to direct. Plot details are unknown, but we can only hope Downey gets the chance to use his glorious pipes should the movie end up being a musical like the 1967 original.

Fast & Furious 9 - April 19

(Warning: Mild spoilers for The Fate of the Furious.)

Vin Diesel teased the release date for the ninth and tenth films in the Fast and the Furious franchise on his Instagram before The Fate of the Furious even had its official name, and with the eighth movie tearing up the box office, the ninth is sure to be huge. While the crew probably won't be going out of this world in the upcoming movie, there's a lot of pressure on the franchise to keep upping the stakes, which means the ninth film will have to find a way to be even more epic than the movies that have come before. With Charlize Theron's Cipher still alive and on the loose at the end of Fate of the Furious, there are lots of opportunities for mayhem in the ninth film, and audiences will definitely want to race out to the theater for the extravaganza.

Avengers 4 - May 3

The fourth Avengers film will mark the end of Marvel's Phase 3, which means it's probably time to break out your tissues. With the new set of films coming to an end and with many of the big-name contracts expiring as well, Avengers 4 will probably result in quite a few character deaths, with Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and more all likely to bite the dust. With the no-holds-barred approach the studio will likely have to the film, Avengers 4 is sure to be epic, ending dozens of storylines set up in past films while also placing the framework for what's to come in the franchise's future. While we'll learn a lot more about what to expect in Avengers 4 when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters in 2018, the movie is sure to be a can't-miss adventure.

John Wick: Chapter 3- May 17

The Bogeyman is coming back to the big screen in 2019, with Keanu Reeves set to return as the titular dog-loving former hitman for John Wick: Chapter Three. Reeves surprised everyone with the amazing first film, and proved he could pull it off again with a well-received Chapter Two; with Chapter Three, the franchise gets a chance to test its growing success during blockbuster season with its first-ever summer release date. The competition will be tougher at the box office this time around, but we're sure this Wick has more than enough firepower to hold its own.

Aladdin - May 24

Guy Ritchie will reveal his "ambitious and non-traditional' take on Aladdin in 2019, with Mena Massoud taking on the title role alongside Power Rangers star Naomi Scott as his Jasmine. Massoud and Scott landed the two main roles after a worldwide casting call involving thousands of hopefuls, so you have to imagine that they're perfect fits.

The rest of the cast includes Will Smith stepping into Robin Williams' role as the Genie and Marwan Kenzari playing the villainous Jafar. Saturday Night Live's Nasim Pedrad is set to play a comic relief role as Jasmine's handmaiden and friend, while Into the Woods' Billy Magnussen joins as a princely rival for Jasmine's love. Magnussen's casting has come with plenty of controversy, with many upset that the classic story will be changed to add a white actor, but we still have trust in the Disney machine to make this a magical trip to the theater.

Toy Story 4 - June 21

If you somehow didn't empty your tear ducts forever during Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4 is on the way. While plot details for the movie have been kept under wraps and the release date has been delayed already, Pixar has yet to put out a bad story about toys. All the details we've heard thus far about Toy Story 4 indicate it will be a solid inclusion in the franchise.

According to Pixar chief creative officer and Toy Story director John Lasseter, the treatment for the film, which wasn't initially planned but ended up being ordered due to the storyline, was "unbelievable," focusing on the love story between Woody and Bo Peep and showing Woody and Buzz teaming up to find a missing Bo. The movie also has big names behind it, with Celeste & Jesse Forever duo Rashida Jones and Will McCormack penning the draft and Lasseter set to co-direct with Inside Out writer Josh Cooley. The Pixar machine hasn't failed us yet, and we're excited to see their animated rom-com on screen.

Cowboy Ninja Viking - June 28

Getty Images
Chris Pratt made a very quick journey from Parks and Recreation schlub to action hero, and his big 2019 outing will find the actor taking the lead in Cowboy Ninja Viking as a new kind of assassin who's able to combine the skills of the three titular types of heroes.

Hardcore fans of comics will recognize the name of the film from the Image Comic series by AJ Lieberman. It's been a long time in the making, with Pratt first signing on in 2014; the star's hectic schedule complicated filming, and things were waylaid further when John Wick's David Leitch and Chad Stahelski had to drop out of the director's chairs due to competing commitments. Still, with script work from Deadpool's Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and The Hangover II's Craig Mazin, this ridiculous premise has a pretty good shot at paying off.

Transformers 7 - June 28

Transformers: The Last Knight is set to reveal the untold history of the Transformers on earth, something that's sure to rewrite the franchise and set up a whole new world for the future. There's still another Transformers movie to follow that as well, so by the time we hit 2019, the Transformers franchise should be ready to go absolutely bonkers. With 14 potential Transformers movies planned, there's clearly lots of territory left for the franchise to explore, and with each movie going bigger than the last one, it seems as though Transformers 7 will be exactly the kind of world-destroying, techno-happy movie that audiences are always clamoring to go out to the theaters for.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 - July 3

The Secret Life of Pets flooded movie theaters with adorableness in the summer of 2016, and although the sequel has been pushed back a year from its originally planned 2018 release date, there are still a lot of good things going for it. Set to follow the continuing adventures of New York City's craziest pets, the sequel will bring back the writing and directing team from the original, which means it should also be able to bring back the magic that made the first film so great.

Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 - July 5

Tom Holland's Spider-Man is set to continue his adventures in a second standalone film in 2019, which will follow another year of Peter's high school experience, similar to Harry Potter. The first movie was wildly successful with both critics and fans, and the second is bringing back a lot of the elements that contributed to its greatness. This includes director Jon Watts, who is in talks to return, and screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who have also worked with Marvel on Ant-Man and the Wasp. We're definitely ready to join Holland and co. on another adventure.

Top Gun 2 - July 12

Maverick will be back in 2019. Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski is set to reunite with Tom Cruise for the long-awaited Top Gun sequel, which will be set in the world of drone technology and fifth generation fighters—and the end of the era of dogfighting. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is on board to return for the sequel, and while it's unclear whether other actors from the original cast will be back, Val Kilmer has said he's ready to step up should he get the call.

The Lion King - July 19

Disney's remake machine is already going strong, and Jon Favreau's The Lion King remake is expected to be a huge piece of the studio's increasing push toward live action. The movie will bring back James Earl Jones to reprise his role as Mufasa from the original, with Donald Glover providing the voice (and, hopefully, the vocals) for Simba. While no one has officially signed on to play Nala yet (rumor has it Beyonce is the top choice), the impressive leads already have some equally impressive backup in the form of Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner, who will voice Timon and Pumba.

While it may be difficult to imagine how the animal planet of The Lion King will translate to live action, Favreau already has quite a lot of experience in this arena, directing Disney's The Jungle Book remake in 2016. The studio knows what they're doing when it comes to pulling on people's heartstrings and bringing up alllll the childhood nostalgia, and with a good cast in front of the camera and an impressive crew behind the scenes, The Lion King is sure to roar its way into your heart.

Artemis Fowl - Aug. 9

Getty Images
Millions of readers remember Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl novels, which followed the titular precocious criminal mastermind throughout a series of fantastical adventures around the globe. The books are ripe for the film franchise treatment, but it hasn't happened—yet. Thor and Murder on the Orient Express director Kenneth Branagh is set to direct an adaptation, scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2019. While no casting announcements have been made yet, this looks like a family-friendly film saga in the making.

Gemini Man - Oct. 4

Getty Images
Will Smith fans have more than just Aladdin to look forward to in 2019. The actor is also set to lead Ang Lee's Gemini Man, starring as an aging assassin trying to get out of the business but pulled back in when he has to fight against his own clone—who's 25 years younger, and at the peak of his abilities.

Gemini's been in the works for years, first set up at Disney in 1997 based on a pitch from Jack the Giant Slayer's Darren Lemke. While the story's central conceit forced execs to wait until visual effects technology caught up, digitally de-aging actors has become a common practice. This promises to be a futuristic action thriller with a nifty twist—and twice as much Will Smith is never a bad thing.

Untitled James Bond Movie - Nov. 8

Daniel Craig returns as James Bond in the character's 25th feature film in 2019. While the star's involvement was left up in the air for a long time, he's confirmed to come back for what's reportedly one last outing, with Blade Runner 2049's Denis Villenueve, Hell or High Water's David Mackenzie, and '71's Yann Demange reportedly the frontrunners to direct. A lot about the movie is still being hammered out right now (including a distributor, in a hotly contested race), but none of it threatens to revoke 007's long-standing license to kill at the box office.

Frozen 2 - Nov. 27

Bundle up, because Frozen 2 is also coming your way in 2019. Not much is known right now about the sequel to the 2013 mega-hit, but we're ready to guarantee it will feature at least a couple catchy songs that are sure to become karaoke mainstays for the rest of eternity. The sequel will further explore the relationship between Idina Menzel's Elsa and Kristen Bell's Anna, both of whom showed that they know how to do compelling voiceover work in the first movie. The original film also provided some of Disney's most engaging and feminist heroines to date, something we're definitely excited to see more of down the line. (Plus, Olaf.) While we don't know anything specific about the plot yet, Frozen 2 is sure to warm your cold heart.

Wonder Woman 2 - Dec. 13

Wonder Woman is the DCEU's highest-grossing film to date in the U.S., so it makes sense that Warner Bros. quickly ordered a sequel. The movie will also bring back director Patty Jenkins, who's set to co-write the script alongside DC Studios head Geoff Johns and The Expendables' Dave Callaham.

While plot details have been kept tightly under wraps, Jenkins has said she'd like the film to bring Diana to America, likely during the period between the events of Wonder Woman and those of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The sequel is also reportedly said to have found a way to bring back Chris Pine, so look forward to more action, fun, and romance.

Masters of the Universe - Dec. 18

There's been good news and bad news recently about the long-gestating Masters of the Universe adaptation. While the movie finally got a release date, hinting it could actually be headed towards production soon, it lost its director, with McG dropping out for an unknown reason. However, the film is still shaping up to be a powerful adaptation of the cosmic He-Man, with an experienced superhero screenwriter at the helm in David S. Goyer, the man behind Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Blade, Man of Steel, and more. There are also a bevy of A-list actors reportedly vying to play roles in the film, and, with more and more stars scrambling to sign on to superhero movies in recent years, it looks like Masters of the Universe should have no problem assembling an impressive cast of characters.

Star Wars: Episode IX - Dec. 20

There have already been some shake-ups behind the scenes of Star Wars: Episode IX, with Lucasfilm dropping Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow from the project a few months before production was set to begin. They found someone who's definitely qualified to take over, however, with The Force Awakens' J.J. Abrams returning to the franchise to write and direct the trilogy finale. While this bumped the movie's release date back six months, there are still plenty of signs pointing to this one being epic.

The Last Jedi should tell us a lot about the plot of Star Wars: Episode IX, but we do know that Episode IX will provide a resolution to the trilogy, which will follow a similar arc to past Star Wars trilogies, according to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. And, if just the plot of the movie isn't enough to get you out to theaters, the company is looking to set up a future of standalone movies and spinoffs, meaning Episode IX will probably be a launching pad for years of the franchise's future. Star Wars fan? This is required viewing.

Shrek 5 - TBD

Shrek 5 won't hit theaters until nearly nine years after Shrek Forever After, but Dreamworks is assuring viewers it will be worth the wait. The fifth film is apparently set to launch a reinvented Shrek franchise, with a whole potential Shrek universe on the way as well. "Reinvention was sort of called for," said screenwriter Michael McCullers. "There's been four movies and a lot of material, so the characters are pretty beloved and they're great characters, but you also have to think of a pretty new take at that point." While it's unclear exactly what the reinvention will entail, there are quite a few storylines in the Shrek universe that have yet to be explored, and it will be interesting to see which fairy tale myths the franchise decides to mine next.
